Q. How do I prevent my (letter) grade being changed to a G when grading a Turnitin file in the grade centre?

Answer

Problem: When grading Turnitin assignments in the grade centre, a grade will change to 0 upon a second viewing of a Turnitin submission.

This issue only affects staff who are marking Turnitin assignments in the grade centre when the column has been changed to display either Undergraduate or Postgraduate grading letter.

Once a grade has been entered in the 'grade centre', if the Turnitin file is revisited in the tab 'Grade Attempt' the grade will display as a Letter out of 100 (as below), when saved the grade changes to a “G” regardless of the original mark.

Temporary solutions to resolve this problem:

  • In the grade centre, set the column 'primary display' to text and add your grade manually. (as below)

  • Check all your 'G' grades before sending to student records in 'Grade History' (see below)

Edit Column Information > Change Primary Display

Grade History

The history of grading is recorded in the grade history tab: 'Grade History > View Complete History'. By default this displays the last two steps taken by the instructor, to see ALL the grade history click the option 'View Complete History' at the bottom of the window.

Above "Grade History" Window with 'Grade History' selected.

Above: 'View Grade History' button is underneath recent changes to the grade.

Additional Grading Guidance:

As a result of this issue, we are advising all staff who mark Turnitin assignments in the grade centre to record the details of their grading in the 'Grading Notes' area (as below). This is to ensure that there is a clear record of the actual grade visible to both the first and second marker.
