If you are a current student or member of staff at the University of Northampton you can connect to the University's student or staff network. There are also networks for visitors and a dedicated network for gaming

Using a laptop

In the notification area of your laptop, next to the time and volume controls, click on the wifi logo to see the networks you can connect to.

Select the network UoN_Student (if you are a student) or UoN_Staff (if you are a member of staff). Enter your University ID (student number or staff ID), followed by your University password.

Using a phone or tablet device

Open the Settings app on your device and then select wifi. You will see the available wifi networks. Choose UoN_Student (if you are a student) or UoN_Staff (if you are a member of staff). Once you have selected this, follow instructions below for your device.

For Apple devices enter your University ID (student number or staff ID) in the username field, and your University password in the password field, then press 'connect'.

For Android devices enter the information as follows;

  • EAP method: PEAP
  • Phase 2 authentication: MSCHAPV2
  • CA Certificates: 'Unspecified' or 'Do not validate'
  • Identity: Your University ID (student number or staff username)
  • Anonymous Identity: Leave this field blank
  • Password: Enter your University password
  • Domain: If you are asked for a domain, enter 'northampton.ac.uk'

Then press Connect to join the network.

Gaming network

UON has a wifi network that is dedicated to gaming equipment. You can not automatically join this network, you must register your device first. This is done through the IT self-service portal and there is guidance available

Visitors

If you are a visitor to the University with your own device you can connect to and use the guest wifi option. Follow the instructions above, but select the UoN_Guest network from the list of available networks on your device. When the network is connected, opening a web browser will redirect you to a registration screen, where you will need to follow the instructions to create a temporary account. This account will expire after 24 hours so you will need to create a new account each day that you connect.

Eduroam wifi network

If you are staff or a student at another University you may be able to use the Eduroam wifi network by choosing Eduroam from the available wifi networks on your device. Speak to your home institution if you need assistance connecting.

If you are a University of Northampton student or member of staff visiting another university and wish to connect via the Eduroam network, your login information for Eduroam is slightly different to logging in to the University wifi. Your user name will be your student number (or staff username) with @northampton.ac.uk after it. So, for example, if your student number is 1234567 your username becomes 1234567@northampton.ac.uk. Your password is the same password you use to login to NILE or NELSON.

I'm still having problems connecting, who should I speak to?
