Q. I need to change the page numbers in my dissertation in Microsoft Word
A common problem students have is with numbered and unnumbered sections of their dissertation in Word.
This video explains, really well, how to create different numbered sections in a document - you can also change the format of the numbers in each section too, some sections can even use italics. It is exactly the same principle - dividing the document into sections and un-linking them is the important thing.
On Word for Mac use
>Section break (next page)
You can use page sectioning to ensure your page numbers start on the page you want them to start. This is particularly useful when you need to a cover page and/or a table of contents. This method can be used whether you are starting on a new document or using an existing one.
I'm using MS Word 2016 and this is what it looks like on mine.
Whatever version you are using, look out for and select 'section break next page'.
You then need to add or remove the page numbers.
>Insert >Page numbers >Format page numbers
Set the settings to achieve the results you want.
