Q. How do I enable guest access to my NILE course?

Answer

Step 1. In your NILE course, go to Control Panel, Customisation, Guest and Observer Access.

Step 2: Choose 'Yes' for 'Allow Guests' and click submit to save this choice.

Step 3: To enable guest access to, for example, Module activities, select the options menu for this area of the course, and choose 'Permit guests'. This will then allow anyone with the course URL to access this section of the course.

Please note that if in the options menu it says 'Permit Guests', this means that guests are not currently permitted and you have to click on 'Permit Guests' to permit guests to view this area of the course. If it says 'Deny Guests' it means that guests are currently permitted, and to deny them access to this area of the course you need to click on 'Deny Guests'.

Step 4: Now that at least one part of your course is available to guests, right click on the course title and save the course URL.

Step 5: Paste the course URL into Word or Notepad, or some similar, and modify it as follows.

The guest URL that you have pasted into Word will initially look like this:

https://nile.northampton.ac.uk/webapps/blackboard/execute/courseMain?course_id=_12345_1

However, in order to work the link needs to have this text "login?action=guest_login&new_loc=/webapps/" inserted in between the "https://nile.northampton.ac.uk/webapps/" and the "blackboard/execute/courseMain?course_id=_12345_1" parts of the URL.

The final URL will then look like this (with only the "id=_12345_1" part of the URL being different for different courses):

https://nile.northampton.ac.uk/webapps/login?action=guest_login&new_loc=/webapps/blackboard/execute/courseMain?course_id=_12345_1

Step 6: Before sending the URL to students, check that the link works by trying it out in a browser in which you are not logged into NILE.

When you no longer need the guest access, you can switch it off by going through steps 1 and 2, and setting 'Allow Guests' to 'No'.
