Why do I get a 404 error when trying to open Office documents in NILE?


The latest version of Microsoft Edge offers the ability to open Office files in the browser. However, when this option is enabled, Office documents opened from NILE do not display, and the following error message is given: '404 - File or directory not found. The resource you are looking for might have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable.'

To prevent this from happening you can try using a different browser. We recommend using the Chrome browser.

Alternatively, you can continue to use Edge if you update the settings:

  • Open Edge settings.
  • Select 'Downloads' from the Settings menu.
  • Turn off 'Open Office files in the browser' (the setting is 'off' when the toggle is to the left - in the screenshot below 'Open Office files in the browser' has been turned off).
  • Turn on 'Ask me what to do with each download (the setting is 'on' when the toggle is to the right, as shown in the screenshot below).

When you access files uploaded into NILE you will now be given the option to save the file to your computer, from where you will be able to open it.
