Why this is happening
Microsoft has released a new Windows feature update designed to enhance security,
performance, and overall user experience.
This update introduces improvements that strengthen device protection, improve system
reliability, and ensure continued alignment with our IT standards. Applying these updates is
essential to maintain security compliance and to benefit from the latest functionality and
enhancements provided by Microsoft.
This means your current system will be upgraded without removing your apps, settings, or
files.
If you have been advised that you need to perform this process please try to run it as soon as
possible, to ensure you are able to run it at your convenience
Before starting the process
The process will take around 4 hours and your machine will reboot several times so please ensure that you can be without your machine for that amount of time.
The upgrade can be run from home, as long as you are connected to the internet.
Ensure your device is plugged in before starting the process.
You need to have at least 25GB free space to run the upgrade.
To check you have enough space, open File explorer and click My Computer, if you have less than 25GB free you will need to clear some space before starting the process.
Make sure you have no outstanding updates waiting to install in Software Center, if there are any updates in here you will need to install them and reboot if required before starting the upgrade.
Running the In-Place Upgrade
Open Software Center and Select Operating Systems then Select Windows 11 24H2 Upgrade
Click Install on the pop up
The Upgrade will start downloading software
Sometimes the process will fail at this point, if this happens please try starting it again.
A banner should display across the screen whilst the upgrade is running
When the machine is going to reboot it will pop up a notification
Once the process has started you can leave it to run, no further interaction is required.
You will be able to check if the process has completed by looking in Software Center the status will change from Installing to Installed
What to do If the Upgrade Fails
If the upgrade fails, please log a ticket with the Service Desk, include your asset number in the ticket and the date/time you ran the upgrade.
