NVivo is a software program used for qualitative and mixed-methods research. Specifically, it is used for the analysis of unstructured text, audio, video, and image data, including (but not limited to) interviews, focus groups, surveys, social media, and journal articles.

The University of Northampton supply this for free for students and staff. You can access the files to download and install on the Student Hub (for students and staff - log in required), along with the authorisation code that you will need. There are options to install NVivo for Widows or Apple devices.

Who can help me download NVivo?

Downloading and installing NVivo is supported by the IT department. There are lots of ways to contact IT Services if you need help:

You can also call the IT helpdesk on 01604 893333

  • Fridays 8am to 9am, and then 10am to 5pm.

You can visit IT Services on the ground floor of the Learning Hub:

You need to collect a paper ticket from the kiosk, and wait for your number to be called. You can wait in IT's service area, behind the glass screens to the right of the Student Information Desk.

You can also raise a ticket in the IT Portal at any time.

Who can help me use NVivo?

Library and Learning Services are happy to help with using NVivo. The Maths and Stats team have a drop-in where you can pop in and ask a quick question and bookable tutorials for long questions. LinkedIn Learning also has videos to help with using NVivo. We have a guide available for logging in and using LinkedIn Learning, which is free for students and staff at UON. Skills Hub also has guides about statistics.
