NVivo is a software program used for qualitative and mixed-methods research. Specifically, it is used for the analysis of unstructured text, audio, video, and image data, including (but not limited to) interviews, focus groups, surveys, social media, and journal articles.
Downloading NVivo
1) To access the download file for NVivo, you must sign into the Student Hub. UON Staff members can also sign into this using their standard UON login details.
2) Once you have signed in, click on the 'IT Services' title on the home page.
3) Click on the 'Available Software' box.
4) Scroll down until you see 'NVivo software', about half-way down the page
5) Click on the relevant operating system (Windows or Apple Mac) your device is using to download the install file.
Please note: NVivo cannot be installed on any Android or iOS devices.
Installing NVivo
1) Locate and double-click the NVivo file that you downloaded - the installation process starts automatically.
2) Follow the prompts to:
- Select a language for the NVivo user interface (if prompted).
- Install any prerequisite components. You may be asked to restart your computer - on restart the installation will continue automatically.
- Accept the license agreement.
- Confirm the location of NVivo program files and choose to include an NVivo icon on your desktop.
- Choose the supplementary add-ons that you want to install.
3) Click 'Install' and the installation confirmation is displayed.
4) Once finished with the installation, click 'Finish'.
5) When prompt, enter the license code which can be found by the link you clicked to download the file.

- Library and Learning Services are happy to help with using NVivo. The Maths and Stats team have a drop-in where you can pop in and ask a quick question and bookable tutorials for long questions.
- LinkedIn Learning also has videos to help with using NVivo. We have a guide available for logging in and using LinkedIn Learning, which is free for students and staff at UON.
