Important Note
It is essential that the semester code for your module is correct as SITS will not allow assessment due dates which fall outside the given semester start and end dates, and once teaching has started it may not be possible to move your students between NILE courses. For example, if your module runs over semesters one and two and you are using a NILE course with a semester code of S1 (semester one), your students will not be able to submit assessments in semester two. Unless you are sure that the semester code for your NILE course is correct please do not enrol on it or being populating it with content; instead, contact curriculum@northampton.ac.uk for clarification and, where necessary, a new NILE course with the correct semester code will be created for you and the incorrect one will be removed from NILE.

Following the move to the SITS, NILE Course IDs are formatted in four parts, e.g., PHI1001-SUN-2526-S1, the meaning of which is as follows:

Part 1: Module Code

The first part of the NILE course ID is the module code; in this case, PHI1001. Module codes ending P (e.g., PHI1001P) denote placement modules.

Part 2: Session Code (Mode and Place of Delivery)

The second part of the NILE course ID is the session code, which refers to the mode and place of delivery, in this case SUN.

Standard session codes in use include:

  • SUN (Standard UON) - the module is delivered on campus at the University of Northampton
  • DUN (Distance Learning UON) - the module is a distance learning module delivered by the University of Northampton
  • AUN (Apprenticeships UON) - the module is delivered to degree apprenticeship students by the University of Northampton
  • Pxx (Partner, followed by the partner code, e.g., PNA = NAMI, PAG, = Amity) - the module is delivered by one of our partner institutions.

Part 3: Academic Year

The third part of the NILE course ID is the academic year, in the above example 2526, denoting the academic year 2025/2026.

Part 4: Semester Code

The final part of the NILE course ID refers to the semester in which the module is taught, in this case S1, semester one.

  • Semester 1 = Autumn
  • Semester 2 = Spring
  • Semester 3 = Summer

Semester codes in use include:

  • S1 - Semester 1
  • S2 - Semester 2
  • S3X - Semester 3
  • S12 - Semesters 1 and 2
  • S23X - Semesters 2 and 3
  • S123X - Semesters 1, 2 and 3
  • S31X - Semester 3, and semester 1 of the following academic year
  • S231X - Semesters 2 and 3, and semester 1 of the following academic year
  • S312X - Semester 3, and semesters 1 and 2 of the following academic year

S = Semester code for modules being delivered by UON, e.g., PHI1001-SUN-2526-S1

P = Semester code for modules being delivered by one of our partners, e.g., PHI1001-PNA-2526-P1

N = Non standard start date, referring to a module which starts early, e.g., PHI1001-SUN-2526-NS1 begins a couple of weeks earlier than PHI1001-SUN-2526-S1

X = Crosses the academic year boundary of 31st July, e.g., PHI1001-SUN-2526-S23X

YEAR = Standard UON academic year, e.g., PHI1001-SUN-2526-YEAR

YEARNS = Non standard UON academic year, e.g., PHI1001-SUN-2526-YEARNS

YEARP = Standard academic year for partners, e.g., PHI1001-PNA-2526-YEARP
