A video showing how to set your PIN and borrow a laptop

Where can I borrow a laptop?

There are laptop cabinets on several floors in the Learning hub; on the ground floor through the glass doors near SID, on the 2nd floor near the library help desk, the 3rd floor near the book stock and on the 4th floor near the computer rooms.

Staff will need to go the ground floor of the Creative Hub.

How do I borrow a laptop?

Laptops can be borrowed for a five-hour loan period, are for use on Waterside campus, and must be returned to the same cabinet they were borrowed from. You will need your Student ID card and your PIN to borrow from the cabinet

To borrow a laptop, scan your University ID in the reader below the screen

Scan your card and then press borrow

Then enter your PIN. There is a written or video guide for setting your PIN available.

Type your PIN and press confirm

Then click on the 'Borrow' icon

Click on borrow

Then click on the laptop icon

Click on laptop icon

The screen will tell you which laptop locker has been assigned to you, and also when it is due for return (all laptops are given a five-hour loan period).

The screen will tell you which locker you have been allocated

The laptop locker assigned to you will have a flashing light to help you find it.

The light inside the locker will flash

You will need to scan your ID card in the reader on your assigned row to unlock the locker door.

Scan your card again in the reader for the column

Then remove the laptop, unplug both the power lead and data cable. Once you have done this, please close the locker door.

You cannot save onto the laptop - you must save your work to your OneDrive. We have a guide available that explains how to use OneDrive to make your work safe and accessible to you. OneDrive is a free facility for students.

Laptops must be returned by the time on the screen. If you still need a laptop, you can borrow another once you have returned the first one you borrowed. Laptops are only for use on campus.

How do I log in to the laptop?

When you borrow the laptop, it will display the locked screen:

" "

Click the return button and it will change to the log in screen. Enter your student number in the top box, and your University password in the box below:

I'm having trouble with the cabinet, what should I do?

During the library's staffed hours, you can go to the Library help Desk on the 2nd floor of the Learning Hub and we will be happy to help you. Outside of these times, please go to the Student Information Desk on the ground floor. If you are returning a laptop, you will be given a paper receipt and the laptop will be taken off you library account as soon as library staff are in again.
