The UMF (University Modular Framework) review in 2016-2017 set guidelines for the maximum number of Learning Outcomes (LOs) for programmes and modules. For programmes the maximum number of LOs are:

  • CertHE - 6 (3 / 3) subject specific / Employability and Changemaker LOs
  • DipHE - 8 (5 / 3) subject specific / Employability and Changemaker LOs
  • Ordinary Degree - 12 (9 / 3) subject specific / Employability and Changemaker LOs
  • Honours Degree - 12 (9 / 3) subject specific / Employability and Changemaker LOs
  • PG Cert / PG Dip - 12 (9 / 3) subject specific / Employability and Changemaker LOs
  • Masters - 12 (9 / 3) subject specific / Employability and Changemaker LOs.

For modules, the guidelines are:

  • 10 credits - normally no more than 4 LOs
  • 20 - 40 credits - normally no more than 6 LOs
  • 40 - 80 credits - normally no more than 8 LOs.

For a 20-credit module it’s usual to see 4 subject specific LOs and 2 Employability and Changemaker LOs but the split of subject specific and employability can vary according to the focus of the module.
