As a general guide, rooms are furnished with a desk, chair, a bed, wardrobe, set of drawers and / or shelves. You will need to bring:

  • Bedding (duvet, pillows, sheets, duvet covers, pillowcases), please remember to check the size of bed in your room before purchasing bedding
  • Cooking, eating and drinking utensils
  • Towels and toiletries.

Essential kitchen items are provided within your student accommodation at the University of Northampton and these have been electrically tested for safety. All kitchens come supplied with electrical equipment such as fridges, kettles, and irons, so students are asked not bring any items like this for personal use.

You may bring other kitchen items such as blenders and coffee pod machines (as long as these are only used in the kitchen). Appliances such as hairdryers, hair straighteners, TV's or gaming consoles can be brought and kept in your room, provided they have passed PAT testing.

Prohibited items

Some items are prohibited in order to ensure your time in student accommodation at the University of Northampton is not only comfortable and enjoyable, but also safe. Items brought to University that are not safe, or do no comply with UK / University regulations will be confiscated.

You are not permitted to bring any appliances that promote unsupervised cooking such as pressure cookers, deep fat fryers, or additional plug-in hobs.

More information

Items are insured as long as you keep within the terms of ensuring you keep your windows and doors locked when you leave your room. Try not to bring high-value items to University. If you do bring them, you may need to top your insurance up to a higher value.

Terms and Conditions of Residency document explains this in more detail, including information about insurance. You will find the document need in the 'Completing the process' paragraph.

You can contact the Accommodation team by email at accommodation@northampton.ac.uk if you have any questions regarding your accommodation or which items you should bring when staying in a Halls of Residence.
