The risk addresses the potential for exposure to asbestos on University premises from the release of asbestos fibres into the environment.
All forms of Asbestos can be hazardous but blue (crocidolite) and brown (amosite) asbestos are known to be more dangerous than white (chrysotile) asbestos. Any material containing one or more of these fibrous silicates at more than trace amounts falls within the Asbestos definition.
The following university buildings have been identified as containing traces of asbestos, i.e. the Development Hub, Resources Centre and the Scholars Green residencies. All the asbestos is located in restricted areas including riser cupboards and ancillary locations, and it is tagged so it is identifiable. All asbestos locations are inspected annually by specialist contractors to ensure the asbestos remains in a safe condition.
If invasive physical works are planned to the building infrastructures in any of the listed properties, the relevant Asbestos Report must be consulted as part of the risk assessment for the work activity before the works commences.
The latest Asbestos Survey Reports can be accessed on the contractor web portal.
The Asbestos Management Policy can be found on this link.
There is also a homepage that lists the range of Health and Safety risks identified as relevant to the University's activities and facilities, together with information on the University's policies and arrangements on how these risks are to be managed and controlled.
