Moving vehicles traversing the Waterside Campus could strike pedestrians leading to serious injury. University premises are designed to separate pedestrians and vehicle traffic wherever practicable.
The University applies a 10mph maximum speed for all vehicles traversing University roads and traffic routes given the presence of students and staff. Raised kerbs, bollards, signage, planting, and protective barriers are installed at locations around University grounds to separate vehicles from pedestrian pathways where practicable.
Park Avenue on Waterside Campus is a private road with restricted access for use only by university service vehicles, buses and emergency service vehicles. Staff and students with mobility or health issues can apply for permission to travel along Park Avenue and to park in allocated parking spaces, and this can be arranged through Campus Security.
From 21st October 2025, Park Avenue will be closed for an extended period for new access control barriers to be installed. Once the new barriers are operational, they will be controlled by ANPR technology with access only for registered vehicles.
Should you use your own car to travel on university business to a place other than your usual place of work, you should ensure your personal motor vehicle insurance has a 'business use' extension to the cover. Insurers will provide this policy extension on request although there may be an administration charge if the request is made mid-term in the policy.
There is also a homepage that lists the range of Health and Safety risks identified as relevant to the University's activities and facilities, together with information on the University's policies and arrangements on how these risks are to be managed and controlled.
