Do I use Display Screen Equipment (DSE)?

Basically, if you use DSE more or less continuously on most working days then you are required to complete a DSE Assessment form. Computer equipment or DSE is used extensively by nearly all members of staff at the University.

What is DSE?

Display Screen Equipment means any alphanumeric or graphic display screen, regardless of the display process involved.

Do I need to complete a DSE Assessment?

The University requires that all members of staff complete the mandatory on-line training course for DSE, which includes a requirement to complete an assessment form based on your use of DSE at your workstation.

What if I work from home?

There is no need to undertake a new DSE self-assessments on the e-learning platform whilst you are working from home. If you receive a reminder to review your DSE self assessments during a period of working solely from home, you should undertake the assessment at the earliest opportunity when you return to your normal place of work at the University

There is a UON guide on working from home. (Log in required)

DSE and Employer Responsibilities

UON must ensure all DSE users complete a work station assessment.

The UON must also:

  • Reduce the health risks associated with DSE use, such as providing the opportunity for regular breaks to avoid eye strain
  • Pay for eye tests when requested
  • Provide training and information, such as how to set up your workstation correctly. DSE training is a legal requirement for all DSE users.

Line Managers have a duty to:

  • Ensure all DSE assessments are carried out in their area of responsibility as required
  • Assist with the implementation of reasonable adjustments as identified
  • Provide the resources to implement reasonable adjustments as recommended by the DSE Assessor, or any other specialist assessor in relation to the workstation.

How often do I need to complete a DSE assessment?

The assessment must be completed within three months of commencing employment, after any significant change (such as an office moves or change in physical capabilities) and then at intervals not exceeding 12 months.
